PROJECT 2: OLD SCHOOL

WEEK ONE

BOOK BINDING

I found the book binding more difficult than I initially expected, attempting all bar the stab stitched binding multiple times. Particularly, I had difficulty with the saddle stitch binding due to the bluntness of the stapler – were I to do this again I would instead measure the staples and punch the holes myself, though I didn’t have chance at the time.

WINDOW MOUNTING

I recut the lines of my window mounting a few times as I was unsatisfied with the change in bevel if my blade stopped or wavered, and while I was largely pleased by the outcome of the edges, this did create some problems for the corners of the window, which were not as clean as they would have been had I managed singular straight cuts on each edge the first time around.

SURFACE MOUNTING

I chose to space my postcards in two columns of three rather than three columns of two, and was happy with the distance at which I set them.

PERFECT SQUARE

I achieved the centring of the perfect square from printing off a perfect copy and then tracing over the top, afterwards creating a small paper folder to keep it pristine for the time.

EMBOSSING

I achieved the embossing using the blunt end of a mechanical pencil to form the initial shape, followed by the backside of a scalpel to get the sharp and precise lines.
